REM Council excludes TV Informer from election monitoring
The Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) Council is facing intense scrutiny following its decision to exclude TV Informer from election campaign monitoring. Council members Dubravka Valić Nedeljković and Rodoljub Šabić reported that all eight members had initially expressed written support for including the broadcaster, noting that the decision shifted unexpectedly between 10:00 and 12:00.
Four independent members of the Council have formally alerted international institutions and diplomatic missions, alleging that the body is subject to direct political influence. In response, REM Council President Stevica Smederevac denied these allegations, stating that the decision was based on assessments from the supervisory and analysis service. Smederevac argued that the regulator lacks the necessary human and technical capacity to expand monitoring to additional programs without risking the integrity of the current 11-program sample.
This controversy occurs amid broader concerns regarding the integrity of the upcoming Serbian elections, including allegations of phantom voters, misuse of state resources, and pressure on independent media outlets.
