Sergey Lavrov demands clarification of US role in Ukraine peace talks
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the United States’ role in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine must be clarified. He disputed U.S. State Department spokesperson Mark Lamont Romano’s claim that no agreement was reached at the August 2025 Alaska summit, repeating the Russian view that an “Alaska proposal” was presented and accepted. Lavrov quoted the U.S. side: “There was a proposal in Alaska, but there was no agreement in Alaska,” and argued that if the U.S. had put forward proposals and Russia had consented, it could not be dismissed as a non‑agreement.
In a separate incident, Lavrov’s lengthy analysis of the Ukraine conflict and Europe, prepared for Politico Europe, was withdrawn at the last minute, prompting criticism of media censorship. The unpublished piece, later released in Greek translation, reiterated Russia’s long‑standing narrative about Western interference in Ukraine and called for a “fair and lasting peace.” Both statements underscore Moscow’s effort to reshape the diplomatic discourse surrounding the conflict.
