Sergio Chumil withdraws from Vuelta a España after crash

Guatemalan cyclist Sergio Chumil, riding for the Burgos-Burpellet-BH team, has been forced to withdraw from the 2026 Vuelta a España following a heavy crash during the second stage. The incident occurred during the descent between Monaco and Manosque, France, approximately 50 kilometers before the finish line.

Medical evaluations following the accident confirmed that Chumil suffered a traumatic brain injury, along with erosions and a deep wound on his left elbow. While the crash was severe enough to end his participation in the race, medical examinations ruled out any bone fractures, and he remains in stable condition.

Chumil expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, “Strength team. How short this tour was for me.” His team also released a supportive message, noting that despite his withdrawal, he will continue to support the squad throughout the competition.
