Sergio Chumil participation in Vuelta a España 2026

Overview

Guatemalan cyclist Sergio Chumil, competing for the Burgos-Burpellet-BH team, began the 2026 Vuelta a España by completing the first stage in Monaco. During the 9.4-kilometer individual time trial, Chumil finished 173rd with a time of 12 minutes and 21 seconds.

However, Chumil was forced to withdraw from the race during the second stage following a heavy crash while descending between Monaco and Manosque, France. Medical evaluations confirmed he sustained a traumatic brain injury, as well as wounds to his left elbow, though no bone fractures were found. Chumil described the early end to his tour on social media, stating, ‘Strength team. How short this tour was for me.’
