Mattarella calls for reform of Italian Provinces at UPI Assembly

Italian President Sergio Mattarella attended the 39th National Assembly of the Union of Italian Provinces (UPI) in Imperia, where he called for an end to the institutional limbo facing provincial governments. Mattarella emphasized that the incomplete reform process has left these entities in a state of uncertainty, hindering their ability to serve as essential links between regions and municipalities.

During his address, the President also expressed solidarity with law enforcement following recent clashes in Milan, noting nearly 200 injured officers. He called for an in-depth analysis to address violence from emerging, unexpected actors.

Other assembly participants, including UPI President Enzo Lattuca and Minister Paolo Zangrillo, echoed the need for structural reform. They advocated for increased resources, greater competencies, and the return of direct elections to restore the dignity and functionality of the provinces in managing territorial cohesion and public investments.
