Sergio Mattarella calls for European institutional reforms

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has called for urgent reforms within European institutions to ensure the continent can take proactive initiatives in the international arena. Speaking via a message at the opening of the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, Mattarella emphasized that Europe must move beyond mere defensive postures to contribute to an equitable and shared international order.

He noted that changes regarding the functioning, composition, decision-making speed, and priorities of European institutions are indispensable to reflect the sovereignty of the people. Mattarella also highlighted the special responsibility of civil society and the business community in helping the European Union maintain a relevant identity and serve as a virtuous model for international relations.

Addressing the current global context, the President stressed the need for a clear path of action to restore peaceful coexistence among states within a respected legal and institutional framework. He warned that without such stability, the prospects for a prosperous and steadily growing global economy would be severely tested.
