Sergio Mattarella criticizes anti-vaccine sentiment in Italy

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has condemned the spread of "irrational beliefs and destructive fake news" regarding vaccines. Speaking at the Quirinale during the ‘I Giorni della Ricerca’ event, Mattarella described the prejudicial opposition to vaccination as one of the most "disconcerting symptoms" of the modern era, noting that such misinformation can lead to preventable loss of life.

His remarks coincide with political tension in the Italian Chamber of Deputies following the approval of Article 8 of a healthcare professions bill. This specific provision seeks to allow the reinstatement of medical professionals who were struck from official registers during the Covid-19 pandemic due to their refusal to comply with vaccine mandates. While the measure passed the Chamber, it faces potential opposition in the Senate and has caused friction within the governing majority, including discomfort expressed by Forza Italia.
