Italian President Mattarella healthcare advocacy

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has emphasized the necessity of protecting the National Health Service (SSN), describing the public system as “inestimable.” He highlighted the importance of utilizing PNRR funds to modernize national infrastructure and called for addressing regional healthcare inequalities, specifically noting the mobility of citizens traveling from Southern Italy to the Center-North for specialized oncological care.

Mattarella has also issued sharp critiques of vaccine opposition, describing it as one of the most “disconcerting symptoms” of the spread of irrational beliefs and destructive fake news. He criticized those who attempt to “poison public opinion” regarding scientific progress, noting that such misinformation can lead to preventable loss of life.

These remarks coincide with legislative developments in the Chamber of Deputies regarding a bill on healthcare professions. The legislation includes Article 8, a provision that could allow for the reinstatement of doctors who were struck from professional registers during the Covid-19 pandemic due to their anti-vaccine stances. While the measure passed the Chamber, it faces potential opposition in the Senate and has caused friction within the governing majority, including expressed discomfort from Forza Italia.
