Serhat Akpınar calls for permanent maritime security policy

Serhat Akpınar, General Secretary of the Democratic Party and Girne Member of Parliament, has called for maritime security to be established as a permanent state policy. Following a recent maritime incident on the Girne-Taşucu line, Akpınar emphasized the need for a coordinated, rapid-response system to manage accidents, fires, medical emergencies, irregular migration, and environmental disasters.

Akpınar proposed the creation of a ‘Northern Cyprus Marine Research and Security Center’ in collaboration with universities. His recommendations include the development of detailed bathymetric maps, the deployment of specialized equipment such as sea ambulances, rescue jet-skis, and unmanned aerial and maritime vehicles, and the establishment of joint capacity with Turkey for deep-sea search operations using sonar and robotic systems.

Furthermore, the proposal advocates for a ‘Blue Homeland and Marine Life Strategy’ to integrate fishing, water sports, environmental protection, and marine tourism. Akpınar also suggested digital monitoring of port inspections, passenger manifests, and crew training, alongside expanding maritime ecology and first aid education in schools.
