Galliani and Malagò to compete for FIGC presidency
The race for the presidency of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has become a two-way contest between current commissioner Giovanni Malagò and Adriano Galliani. The election is scheduled for the Federal Elective Assembly on December 14.
Galliani, a former executive for Milan and Monza, has officially entered the race with the support of the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) and the Italian Coaches Association (AIAC). These technical components, which hold approximately 30% of the federal votes, cited Galliani’s experience and a need for progressive reforms as primary motivations for their endorsement.
Malagò, who is currently serving as extraordinary commissioner after his previous election was annulled due to a formal registration error, has secured the necessary signatures from eleven Serie A clubs to formalize his candidacy. His supporters include major clubs such as Napoli, Roma, Torino, and Bologna.
The competition has caused a significant split within Serie A, with clubs divided between the two candidates. While Malagò maintains a strong base among many top-tier clubs, Galliani has gained momentum through the backing of the players' and coaches' associations and support from clubs like Inter, Atalanta, and Milan.
