Italian Football Federation leadership transition
Overview
Following the resignation of Gabriele Gravina, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is undergoing a leadership transition ahead of elections scheduled for December 14.
Giancarlo Abete, president of the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti (LND), announced he would not run for the presidency, criticizing the “procedural chaos” surrounding the transition.
The race has solidified into a two-way contest between Giovanni Malagò and Adriano Galliani. Malagò, the current extraordinary commissioner, is seeking reelection after his previous victory was declared void due to “registration technicalities.” He has reached the required quorum to formalize his candidacy, securing support from 11 of the 20 Serie A clubs, including Napoli, Roma, Bologna, Lecce, Monza, Torino, Fiorentina, Frosinone, Genoa, Parma, and Udinese.
Galliani, the former Milan and Monza executive, has officially entered the race by registering as an accompanying official with the amateur club Enotria 1908. He has secured the backing of the Associazione Italiana Calciatori (AIC) and the Associazione Italiana Allenatori Calcio (AIAC), which represent approximately 30% of the total voting weight. Galliani has also reportedly secured support from clubs including Inter, Milan, Atalanta, Cagliari, and Como.
The competition has caused a significant split within Serie A. While Malagò holds a majority of club signatures, several teams, including Juventus, Lazio, Sassuolo, and Venezia, remain undecided. The final outcome will be decided by 274 delegates during the Elective Federal Assembly, with the positions of the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti (34%), Lega Pro (12%), and Serie B (6%) yet to be finalized.
