Muğla forest fires force evacuations in Fethiye and Köyceğiz

Multiple forest fires broke out across Muğla, Turkey, with significant incidents in Fethiye and Köyceğiz. In Fethiye, a fire near the Karagedik neighborhood spread rapidly due to strong winds, threatening residential areas and forcing the evacuation of the Fethiye Nursing Home. Of the 64 elderly residents at the facility, 16 were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation, though officials reported no fatalities. Additionally, 78 households and 274 citizens were moved to safe zones.

In Köyceğiz, a fire triggered by a fuel tanker explosion on a highway also spread to nearby forests, causing traffic disruptions. Authorities have largely brought both the Fethiye and Köyceğiz fires under control, though cooling operations continue.

The operation featured the first use of 'Nefes', a domestically developed T-70 firefighting helicopter by TUSAŞ, which provided critical night-vision aerial support when other aircraft were grounded due to darkness. Muğla Governor Dr. İdris Akbıyık warned citizens of high risks in the coming days due to high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds.
