SERNIC reports increased crime resolution and major fentanyl seizure in Mozambique

The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Mozambique has reported significant developments in crime investigation and drug interdiction. In the Manica province, SERNIC resolved 419 criminal cases during the first half of 2026, an increase from 210 cases during the same period in 2025. These cases involved offenses such as homicide, aggravated robbery, and sexual assault. During a visit to the institution, State Secretary Lourenço Lindonde noted progress but highlighted challenges regarding insufficient space, financial resources, and human capital.

In a separate major operation, SERNIC seized 1.4 tons of fentanyl at Maputo International Airport. The synthetic drug, which originated from Campinas, Brazil, and transited through Luanda, Angola, was discovered concealed within 207 boxes of liquid cosmetics. A 31-year-old Mozambican man was detained while attempting to collect the shipment. This seizure follows another significant incident in July, where authorities intercepted 3.7 tons of fentanyl at the same airport.
