Overview

Mozambique is expanding its efforts to combat organized crime through increased investigation capabilities and strategic asset recovery.

In the first half of 2026, the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) reported a rise in resolved criminal cases in Manica province, increasing from 210 cases in 2025 to 419. During this period, authorities also intercepted 1.4 tons of fentanyl at Maputo International Airport, a shipment originating from Brazil and transiting through Angola.

To further dismantle criminal networks, Attorney General Américo Letela has prioritized the economic deconstruction of these groups. This strategy utilizes the Central Asset Recovery Office (GCRA) to seize illicit assets, aiming to prevent criminals from reinvesting profits into illegal activities such as money laundering, corruption, and terrorism.
