Serres fatal head-on collision kills mother and son
A fatal head-on collision on the Amphipolis–Drama road near Palaiochomi, Serres, resulted in the deaths of a mother and her son. The victims, of Albanian origin and residents of Palaiochomi, were traveling to work when their vehicle collided with a truck around 7:30 AM.
Experts and police are investigating the circumstances of the crash. Accident analyst Georgios Karydas noted that the car appeared to be traveling at speeds significantly higher than the limit, which, combined with the road's curvature, likely caused the vehicle to lose control and enter the oncoming lane. Another expert, Panagiotis Stamiris, suggested that while high speed was a factor, the driver's lack of immediate corrective action upon entering the wrong lane might indicate a sudden distraction, such as mobile phone use.
The driver of the truck, who was slightly injured and treated at Drama General Hospital, stated he had no time to react to the oncoming vehicle. The collision was captured on video by the truck's camera, which was being used for a live Facebook broadcast at the time. Authorities are reviewing the footage to clarify the exact technical or human factors involved.
