Serres fatal road crash

On 7 August 2026 at about 07:30, a head‑on collision occurred on the Amphipolis‑Drama highway near Palaiokomi in the Serres region. A private car carrying an Albanian mother (reported as 43 years old in some accounts and 46 years old in others) and her 21‑year‑old son struck a truck travelling in the opposite lane. Both occupants of the car died instantly. Police footage showed the car veering into the opposite lane; experts, including traffic‑accident specialist Panagiotis Stameri, said the vehicle was travelling above the 70 km/h limit—estimates range from 70 km/h to over 80 km/h—and a distraction such as mobile‑phone use may have prevented the driver from correcting the trajectory.

The truck driver, a 56‑year‑old livestreaming on Facebook, attempted to swerve left before impact and sustained minor injuries (a small chest fracture and a hand wound) and was taken to the General Hospital of Drama. Video from a camera mounted on the truck is being examined as key evidence.

Accident analyst Georgios Karydas noted that the car's speed, combined with the road's curvature, likely caused the vehicle to lose control. The victims were Albanian citizens who had lived in Paleokomi for years and worked for the same local company; their husband/father described the loss as "everything". The crash has left the local community, especially the Albanian diaspora, in mourning, with an outpouring of condolences on social media. A pre‑investigation has been opened, and Greek authorities continue to examine traffic safety on the route, cooperating with Albanian consular services regarding the victims.
