Serres Hospital: Armed group rescues Albanian prisoner

A 41-year-old Albanian prisoner escaped from Serres General Hospital on the night of Friday, September 11, 2026, during a highly organized armed operation. The prisoner, who was being transferred from Nigrita prison after reporting feeling unwell, was intercepted by four armed accomplices outside the hospital's psychiatric clinic.

The assailants arrived in vehicles resembling police patrol cars, including a Nissan Navara equipped with sirens, and wore uniforms mimicking the OPKE police units. Using Kalashnikov rifles, the group disarmed the correctional officers, seized their weapons, radios, and mobile phones, and forcibly removed the prisoner.

Police have launched a massive manhunt across the Macedonia region. Investigators have already located one abandoned vehicle near a regional road in Serres containing a Kalashnikov rifle and ammunition. A second vehicle was found completely burned in the Volvi area. The escaped individual is considered highly dangerous, with a criminal history involving narcotics and a previous attempted murder in Thessaloniki.
