Prisoner escape from Serres General Hospital

Overview

On the night of September 11, 2026, an organized armed group facilitated the escape of an Albanian prisoner, identified as 41-year-old Gentian Çipi, during a medical transfer at Serres General Hospital in Greece.

Reports indicate that around 23:30, near the hospital’s psychiatric ward, between four and eight assailants intercepted the transport vehicle. The attackers arrived in vehicles equipped with sirens resembling police cars—including a Nissan Navara—and were dressed in uniforms mimicking the OPKE unit. Using Kalashnikovs and other heavy weaponry, the group disarmed the escorting officers, seizing their weapons, radios, and mobile phones. One officer’s service weapon was specifically reported as being taken during the ambush. While Çipi was extracted, a second prisoner in the transport van was successfully restrained by correctional officers.

Çipi, who was being transferred from Nigrita prison due to reported illness, is described by authorities as the leader of a group involved in drug trafficking and violent crime. His record includes charges for homicide, arson, illegal surveillance, and an attempted murder in Thessaloniki.

As the large-scale manhunt continues across the Serres region and Macedonia, Hellenic Police have established roadblocks. Investigators have recovered evidence from the getaway, including a crashed vehicle on a dirt road near the Serres ring road containing a Kalashnikov rifle and ammunition, and a second vehicle found completely burned in the Volvi area.
