Tegucigalpa reservoirs reach critical levels amid water crisis

The main reservoirs supplying water to Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela, Honduras, have reached critical levels due to a rainfall deficit. According to the Municipal Unit of Drinking Water and Sanitation (UMAPS), the global water risk level is classified as high, with reserves falling within the critical range of 25% to 50%.

The Los Laureles reservoir is at 29.51% capacity, storing 3.100 million cubic meters, while the La Concepción reservoir is at 26.56% capacity, with 9.618 million cubic meters stored. Both sources are currently below the 50% threshold.

Authorities have declared a water emergency and are working to optimize consumption and distribution. Officials have warned that the water crisis could persist for an extended period, potentially lasting through parts of 2026 and 2027.
