Setúbal authorities implement wild boar containment plan

Wild boar sightings have increased in the urban and peri-urban areas of Setúbal, Portugal, moving beyond their typical habitats in the Serra da Arrábida. Recent footage shows groups of animals crossing busy streets at night and foraging in public gardens, prompting the Setúbal City Council to issue safety warnings for residents and tourists.

The Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) is reinforcing a containment plan to address the issue. This strategy involves identifying entry channels used by the animals to reach urban zones and beaches, with plans to use traps and hunting to reduce population density in these specific corridors.

While approximately 700 animals were culled in the Arrábida Natural Park during the last hunting year, officials state the population remains large but stable. The ICNF noted that increased sightings in urban areas do not necessarily indicate uncontrolled population growth, but may be linked to younger animals exploring new territories following the post-birth period.
