Setúbal authorities implement wild boar containment plan

Authorities in Setúbal, Portugal, are intensifying efforts to manage wild boar populations following frequent sightings in urban areas and on beaches. The Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) is reinforcing a containment plan specifically targeting the entry channels used by the animals to reach urban spaces and coastal areas like Portinho da Arrábida, Creiro, and Galapinhos.

To control the population, officials plan to identify transit zones and use traps or hunting to extract animals. While approximately 700 animals were culled in the Arrábida Natural Park during the last hunting year, the ICNF notes the population remains large but stable. Officials clarified that increased sightings in urban areas do not necessarily indicate uncontrolled growth, but may result from younger animals exploring new territories.

The Setúbal Municipality has issued safety recommendations, advising residents and tourists to maintain distance, avoid feeding the animals, and ensure food waste is properly contained. The presence of the boars is described as a risk to public safety, domestic animals, and sanitation due to their unpredictable behavior and tendency to forage in gardens and trash containers.
