Setúbal district secures three semifinalists in Portugal's New 7 Wonders contest

Three heritage sites from Portugal's Setúbal district – the medieval Castelo de Palmela, the modern Cristo Rei monument in Almada and the Álvaro Siza‑designed building of the Escola Superior de Educação of the Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal – advanced to the national semifinals of the Novas 7 Maravilhas de Portugal competition.

The regional final for Greater Lisbon, held in Setúbal and broadcast live on TVI, selected a total of seven sites to move on: the three from Setúbal plus the Ponte 25 de Abril, the Aqueduto das Águas Livres, the Sé de Lisboa and the Museu MACAM in Lisbon. Officials highlighted the event’s role in promoting regional identity, tourism and community pride. Voting for the final national selection, scheduled for 2026, will be audited by PwC, with the regional shortlist to be completed by 29 August.
