Portugal New 7 Wonders contest

In late July 2026 the regional final of the "Novas 7 Maravilhas de Portugal" was scheduled for 1 August in Setúbal, featuring 14 finalist monuments across categories such as castles, churches and modern works. The event was to be broadcast live on TVI, with public voting conducted via phone or the TVI Pass app, each vote costing €1 plus VAT and audited by PwC. Organisers urged broad participation to help the sites move toward national recognition.

A few days later, the results of the Greater Lisbon regional final were announced. Three heritage sites from the Setúbal district – the medieval Castelo de Palmela, the modern Cristo Rei monument in Almada, and the Álvaro Siza‑designed Escola Superior de Educação – secured places among the seven semifinalists advancing to the national phase. The remaining semifinalists included the Ponte 25 de Abril, the Aqueduto das Águas Livres, the Sé de Lisboa and the Museu MACAM. Officials highlighted the competition’s role in promoting regional identity, tourism and community pride, with the national voting to be audited by PwC and the regional shortlist to be finalized by 29 August.
