Seven Young Basketball Players Killed in Bus Crash in Ceará, Brazil

A bus carrying the sub‑19 basketball team of the Associação Deportiva e Cultural de Juazeiro do Norte overturned on the CE‑18 highway near Tauá, Ceará, early Monday. The vehicle, which had between 40 and 46 occupants, fell into a ravine, killing seven young athletes – students and former students of local schools and the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology – and injuring dozens more.

Emergency services transported the injured to regional health units. The driver initially left the hospital after treatment but later gave a statement to police. Preliminary investigations point to either a mechanical failure or driver error, and authorities noted that passengers were not wearing seat belts. The Brazilian Minister of Sports expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

The investigation is ongoing, with the State Forensic Police and the Public Security Secretariat seeking to determine the exact cause of the crash.
