Surge in fatal Brazil road crashes and construction accident

Overview

A wave of multi-vehicle collisions and fatal accidents has persisted across Brazil from June through August 2026. The period began with a significant tragedy on June 15 in Ceará, where a bus carrying an under-19 basketball team from Juazeiro do Norte overturned on the CE-187, killing seven athletes and injuring over 30 passengers.

In early July, Ceará saw another fatal bus accident when a vehicle carrying pilgrims overturned on the CE-456 near Canindé, resulting in two deaths and at least 21 injuries. Throughout July, a spate of accidents across various states was reported, including a high-speed collision in Mato Grosso that killed a 4-year-old, and numerous fatal crashes involving trucks, motorcycles, and buses in Paraná, Minas Gerais, and Goiás.

Fatalities continued into August. In Goiás, a major collision on the GO-010 involving a truck, a bus, and two cars killed seven people, including an infant. On August 7, another incident in Crixás, Goiás, saw a truck crash into a parish hall and a residence, reportedly due to suspected brake failure on a downhill road. This collision killed a 47-year-old parish employee and the 23-year-old driver; civil police have launched an investigation into involuntary manslaughter.

Minas Gerais reported several fatalities, including seven deaths on the BR-251 involving a vehicle fleeing a police stop, and a collision between two trucks on the BR-116 that caused a fire and one death. In Bahia, a collision on the BR-101 killed a mother and her 13-year-old son, while a bus and truck collision on the BR-259 injured approximately 30 people. Other accidents were reported in Acre, Paraná, and São Paulo.
