Seven killed in bus crash of Juazeiro basketball team in Ceará

In the early hours of 15 June 2026 a bus carrying the Juazeiro do Norte under‑19 basketball delegation capsized on the CE‑187 highway near the district of Santa Teresa, Tauá, in the interior of Ceará, Brazil. The vehicle, which had about 40–46 occupants, was returning from a tournament in Sobral when it overturned around 03:24 a.m. Seven young male athletes, aged 15 to 22, were killed and at least 30 other passengers were injured, many with only minor abrasions.

The victims were identified as members of the local basketball team and students from public schools in Juazeiro do Norte. Rescue operations were led by the Corpo de Bombeiros, SAMU and the state police; the deceased were taken to the Instituto Médico Legal in Tauá and the injured were transported to regional hospitals. Authorities noted that none of the passengers were wearing seat‑belts, which contributed to the severity of the crash. The driver gave conflicting statements – first saying he had dozed off, later blaming alleged potholes – but investigators found no road defects. The cause of the accident remains under forensic investigation, with possibilities including driver error or mechanical failure.

Ceará Governor Elmano de Freitas expressed condolences, stating, “Recebi com profunda tristeza a notícia do grave acidente…”. The state education department pledged support for the families, and the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte declared a three‑day period of mourning.
