Severe Drought and Tropical Heat Grip South Moravia, Czech Republic

A prolonged drought combined with unusually high tropical temperatures is sharply affecting the South Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Measurements taken at the end of June show water‑stress levels comparable to the worst years on record, according to scientists from Mendel University and the CzechGlobe research team.

Forests are under severe stress, with many trees shedding leaves early, grass turning yellow and shrubs beginning to dry out. Urban green spaces, such as the Bučovice forest park, show signs of desiccation, and local ponds are losing water, prompting the mayor of Bučovice to request technical assistance to oxygenate the water and protect fish. Fruit orchards are also suffering, with reduced quality and yields of apples, pears, plums and cherries. Experts suggest planting more drought‑resistant crops such as rye, millet or wide‑leaf varieties to mitigate future impacts.
