Moravia drought deepens, fish farms forced to early harvest

The summer drought in South Moravia has continued to intensify. By early July, soil moisture in the region fell below ten percent and river discharges dropped to 14 % of normal, prompting bans on surface‑water withdrawals, restrictions on irrigation and warnings for wildlife. Forests and urban parks showed severe stress, and fruit orchards reported reduced yields.
As the heat wave persisted into late July, daytime temperatures exceeded 35 °C and pond levels remained well below normal. Fish‑farm operators in the region, including Jiří Janoštík of Rybářství Hodonín and Ivan Šútovský of Rybníkářství Pohořelice, have adopted water‑conserving measures such as transferring water between ponds, aeration, reduced feeding and lowering stocking densities. At the Hluboká nad Vltavou fishery, three smaller ponds (Blatec, Hlásence and Dolní Novosedský) were harvested ahead of schedule because water levels fell sharply, limiting aeration and raising mortality risk. The enterprise, which normally yields about 800 tons of carp annually in autumn, is monitoring forecasts and prepared to adjust harvest plans further if conditions worsen.
State‑run reservoirs in the Beskydy and Jeseníky mountains remain between 85 % and 100 % full, providing a strategic water reserve of roughly 380 million m³, but the ongoing drought continues to strain agriculture, fisheries and ecosystems across Moravia.
