Severe Flooding Devastates Assam, Displacing Thousands and Destroying Crops

Heavy monsoon rains and a cloudburst in neighboring Nagaland have caused widespread flooding across Assam, especially in the Sivasagar district. Villages located 20‑25 km from the Dikhhow and Jaji rivers were inundated within 24 hours, overturning the belief that distance from a river offers safety. The floodwaters rose to chest level, destroying homes, agricultural fields, livestock and personal documents, while cutting electricity and internet access.

Residents reported no early warning from authorities, leaving them unable to evacuate or protect their belongings. The disaster has left many families homeless, without food, clean water, or medical supplies, and has highlighted the need for improved flood forecasting, stronger embankments, and coordinated relief efforts from the Indian government and humanitarian groups.
