Severe Floods Displace Thousands in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, Bridge Collapse Cuts Access

Heavy monsoon rains have caused severe flooding across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, inundating more than 100 villages. In Assam's Dhemaji district, the Kemi River bridge, a critical 300‑metre iron structure linking Kemi‑Pura and Jonai, collapsed, severing road access for thousands. A railway bridge over the Simen River was also partially damaged, further disrupting transport.

State disaster authorities report over 20,000 people affected, with 40 villages in Bihir Chille Panchayat and more than 60 villages in Bihir Jonai fully submerged. Hundreds of families have been evacuated to relief camps where food, water, and medical aid are being distributed. Three deaths have been confirmed and several people remain missing. The Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force and local administration continue rescue and relief operations, while the central government has pledged additional assistance.

Meteorological forecasts predict continued heavy rain in the region, prompting high‑alert warnings for low‑lying areas and urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
