Satu Mare late frost crop damage fruit trees agricultural losses

A mixed county commission completed field inspections between 20 April and 5 May 2026 and confirmed that a late frost caused severe damage to agricultural production in Satu Mare, Romania. The event affected 3,226.5 ha across 59 administrative units, with the most impacted zones being Oaș (720.18 ha), Supur (646.24 ha), Tășnad (632.12 ha) and Carei (609.51 ha). Fruit orchards suffered the greatest losses: nuts were destroyed 100 % county‑wide, while stone‑fruit trees (cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums and pears) saw 80‑100 % loss. Quinces, hazelnuts and apples also recorded up to 100 % damage in several areas. Strawberries lost 60‑80 % of their yield, especially in Halmeu, Turulung and Porumbești, and other crops such as grapes, blueberries, rapeseed and wheat were hit to a lesser extent. Prefect Altfatter Tamás said the assessment will be forwarded to the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to trigger legal support mechanisms for the affected farmers.
