Severe Storms Flood Streets and Topple Trees in Galați, Romania

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued a RO‑ALERT extreme warning for Galaţi and surrounding localities, warning of heavy thunderstorms, frequent lightning, wind gusts of 60‑80 km/h, hail of 1‑4 cm and rainfall accumulations of 25‑40 L/m² through the evening of 3 July 2026.

Strong winds downed large trees, one of which fell onto a parking area in front of a theatre, destroying a billboard and damaging a parked car. Floodwaters filled streets and courtyards, blocking traffic and trapping several vehicles. Emergency services and police were mobilised across the city to assist residents and clear routes. Water entered multiple houses, prompting three RO‑ALERT messages urging people to seek shelter. The storm also affected other Romanian regions, with heavy rain damaging greenhouses in a Prahova commune. The alert remained in effect until 20:00 on 3 July, with a subsequent yellow‑code warning for continued wind and rain on 4 July.
