Severe storm causes heavy damage in Itapúa, Paraguay
A violent storm, described by residents as having tornado-like characteristics, struck the Itapúa department in Paraguay on Monday, August 31. The weather event heavily impacted the districts of Bella Vista and Edelira, causing significant structural damage to homes and infrastructure.
In Bella Vista, specifically in the Santa Clara and Fordi sectors, reports indicate that at least 51 homes were affected. This includes approximately 10 houses that were completely destroyed and dozens of others with damaged roofs or walls. The storm also uprooted large trees and downed electrical poles and cables.
Emergency response teams, including the National Emergency Secretariat (SEN), the Volunteer Firefighters Corps of Paraguay, and the National Electricity Administration (ANDE), have been deployed to provide aid and clear debris. Firefighters reported 18 emergency services, including responses to collapses and fallen trees. Municipalities have provided temporary tents to families left without shelter as heavy rains continue in the region.
