Severe Storm Floods Bucharest, Romania, Killing One Person

A powerful storm struck Bucharest and 20 surrounding counties in Romania, triggering a red weather alarm and producing record rainfall – up to 88 liters per square metre in some districts. The deluge flooded streets, subways and homes, prompting nearly 2,000 emergency calls and over 1,400 interventions by police and fire crews to clear fallen trees, remove debris and pump out water.

One man died when a tree fell on his vehicle. Dozens of trees were uprooted, roofs collapsed and power lines were toppled, disrupting traffic and causing extensive property damage. The storm followed a heat wave that pushed temperatures above 40 °C, raising energy consumption and electricity prices.

Authorities continued to receive requests for assistance throughout the night, and rescue teams remained on standby as water levels receded.
