Germany tornadoes and severe storms cause deaths and widespread damage
Severe storms and multiple tornadoes struck several German states between August 19 and 20, 2026, resulting in at least two deaths and approximately 12 injuries. The German Weather Service (DWD) confirmed damaging tornadoes in Fürstenwalde (Brandenburg), the Wetzlar area (Hessen), and Höhr-Grenzhausen (Rhineland-Palatinate).
In the Westerwald region, the storms caused extensive structural damage, including the removal of house walls and roofs. Emergency services responded to approximately 160 incidents, and while most power substations were restored by August 21, some municipalities faced ongoing electricity shortages. In the Wartburgkreis, around 80 trees were damaged along the B 285, leading to road closures for clearing operations.
Meteorologists noted that while the 2026 tornado season had been unusually quiet due to drought and high pressure, the weather activity on August 19 was significant across Europe. The European Severe Weather Database confirmed seven tornadoes across five countries on that day.
