Felix Dietzsch of the DWD tornado expert group stated it is ‘pretty certain’ a tornado was involved, noting significant damage in Schlitz, Solms, and the Münchholzhausen district of Wetzlar, where approximately 60 houses were damaged.

In Thuringia, the DWD confirmed a tornado struck the Ohrdruf region with estimated wind speeds between 200 and 300 kilometers per hour. Experts suggest the tornado had a strength of at least F2 on the international Fujita scale. This event resulted in one fatality in the Gotha district after a person was struck by falling tree parts. Cleanup efforts continue in Ohrdruf, Bad Liebenstein, and Dermbach, with forestry companies clearing debris. Due to the destruction, the Altenstein Castle Park in Bad Liebenstein remains closed to visitors.

Earlier, the DWD confirmed three damaging tornadoes in Fürstenwalde/Spree, the Wetzlar area, and Höhr-Grenzhausen. While the 2026 tornado season was initially quiet due to high pressure and drought, activity increased significantly in mid-August.
