Severe storms damage crops in Verona and flood streets in Viterbo, Italy

A second wave of severe weather struck the Veneto region, with hail and strong winds damaging crops in the Bassa Veronese, especially in the municipalities of Salizzole and Concamarise. Michele Marani, director of the agricultural monitoring centre CODIVE, said it was still early to quantify the losses but that the hail had hit potatoes, maize and tobacco, prompting a rapid assessment of the damage.

At the same time, the Tuscia area of Lazio suffered heavy rain, hail and gusty winds that caused flooding, fallen trees and blocked roads in Viterbo, Orte and surrounding towns. Emergency crews, including fire‑fighters, police and civil protection, worked to clear debris, secure unsafe trees and restore traffic flow.

Both incidents highlight the growing vulnerability of Italy’s agriculture and infrastructure to increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
