Severe thunderstorm watch issued for New Mexico and West Texas

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for south-central New Mexico and far west Texas. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has identified threats including large hail, severe wind, and the potential for brief tornadoes.

Supercells have been observed across southern New Mexico, with ongoing supercell mergers and splitting. Forecasters noted that if supercells west of El Paso deviate eastward, there is a potential for tornadoes where dew points are near 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The most probable peak wind gusts are expected to reach 55-70 mph, with hail sizes potentially ranging between 1.50 and 2.50 inches.
