Severe weather impacts central and southern United States
Overview
Severe weather alerts and thunderstorm threats have impacted several states across the central United States. Initial warnings focused on Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas, where authorities cautioned against thunderstorms, flash flooding, and debris flows. In Colorado, heavy rainfall over the Ferris Burn Scar prompted life-threatening flash flood and debris flow warnings. Nebraska and Kansas also faced risks of 60 mph wind gusts, quarter-size hail, and torrential rain.
Subsequent monitoring by the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center identified continued threats in the Plains region. Eastern Colorado and western Kansas experienced severe thunderstorm watches, with supercells capable of producing hail exceeding 2.5 inches. Additionally, storm clusters moving from Oklahoma into North Texas raised concerns regarding damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to 1.25 inches. The Storm Prediction Center has since issued mesoscale discussions regarding severe weather potential for western Oklahoma and northwest or west-central Texas, noting that while formal watches are unlikely, isolated wind gusts of 55-70 mph and hail remain possible. Volatile environments near the Kansas and Oklahoma border have seen supercells move through areas including Moline and Elk City.
Expanding the threat, a Flood Watch was issued for 31 counties in Oklahoma and several in northern Texas. Forecasts indicated heavy rainfall could reach six inches in western Oklahoma and five inches in western North Texas. In mid-October, the pattern intensified with tornado warnings issued for north central Pecos County, Texas, and a level-two slight risk for regions including the Oklahoma City metro. Most recently, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for south-central New Mexico and far west Texas, where supercells have been observed merging and splitting, bringing threats of hail up to 2.5 inches and potential tornadoes.
