Severe thunderstorms and hail batter northeastern Slovenia

Dark clouds gathered over northeastern Slovenia on a late afternoon, producing short but intense rain, hail and strong gusty winds. The storm affected municipalities including Ljutomer (Stara Cesta, Precetinci, Desnjak‑Lahonci, Radoslavci, Jeruzalem, Zgornji Kamenščak, Kuršinci), Sveti Jurij ob Ščavnici, Destrnik, Ptuj (Kicar), Ormož and Moravske Toplice. Photographs of hail were submitted by local readers.

Meteorological data show more than 14,000 lightning strikes recorded during the event, marking the 44th day of thunderstorms in Slovenia this year. The civil protection agency reported fallen trees and wind damage in Kanal, Litija, Slovenj Gradec and Slovenska Bistrica, while the storm front moved toward the Croatian border, bringing strong winds and lightning to Zagreb. Forecasts call for a brief calm on the coast, followed by possible further showers on Sunday.
