Upper Midwest Heat Wave Triggers Severe Storm Warnings

A widespread heat event is affecting the Upper Midwest and nearby mountain states. In north Iowa, the National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning with heat index values projected to reach 113°F on Sunday, followed by a heat advisory on Monday. Similar extreme heat warnings are in effect for central and southern Minnesota and central Wisconsin, with heat indices near 100°F and possible severe thunderstorms later in the day.

Severe thunderstorms are also forecast across the region. The Storm Prediction Center highlighted a gust front moving through south‑central Minnesota and north‑central Iowa, with expected wind gusts of 55‑70 mph and isolated large hail. Montana is under a slight‑risk designation for damaging winds up to 65 mph, while Idaho issued a special weather statement for wind gusts of 50‑55 mph. In Colorado, a flash‑flood warning was issued for the Aspen Acres burn scar area, where up to an inch of rain has fallen, creating life‑threatening flood conditions.

Residents are advised to stay informed through local alerts, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat, secure loose objects, and seek shelter from strong winds and thunderstorms.
