Severe Thunderstorms Prompt Warnings Across South Dakota and Montana on June 27, 2026

The Storm Prediction Center issued Mesoscale Discussion 1356 describing a severe weather threat that moved from eastern Montana into the western Dakotas. Large hail, localized downbursts and strong to severe wind gusts of 75–90 mph were expected, with the potential for tornadoes featuring 85–110 mph winds.

In South Dakota, the Rapid City Weather Forecast Office maintained a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for several counties, reporting 60 mph wind gusts, small hail and the risk of roof, siding and tree damage. The storm line tracked northeast at 15 mph, affecting communities such as Rapid City, Wall, and areas along Interstate 90. A tornado watch remained in effect until 11 pm MDT for parts of southwest and west‑central South Dakota.
