Severe Weather Alerts Hit Veracruz, Mexico and the Dominican Republic
The Mexican meteorological service warned that intense rains, thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected this afternoon in the mountainous central and northern parts of Veracruz. Areas such as Xalapa, Orizaba, Huatusco, Coatepec and the surrounding highlands could see heavy rainfall, lightning and wind speeds of 20‑30 km/h, while coastal zones between Veracruz and Coatzacoalcos may receive showers overnight. Temperatures will range from the mid‑20s °C in the mountains to 30‑34 °C on the coast, with heat‑index values approaching 38 °C.
In the Dominican Republic, forecasters reported extreme heat and Saharan dust limiting cloud formation nationwide, but isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in the Central Cordillera and Caribbean coastal provinces. The capital Santo Domingo, La Altagracia, La Romana and other eastern coastal towns may see brief rain, lightning and gusty winds from Friday into Saturday, with temperatures remaining very high throughout the period.
Both nations have issued health advisories urging people to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and pregnant women.
