Sewage Overflows Disrupt Streets in Paso del Macho and Hopelchén

In the centre of Paso del Macho, the sanitary drainage system on Avenida Paso del Macho collapsed, allowing raw sewage to flow over the pavement between Lagunilla and Zaragoza streets. Residents report constant foul odors and a potential source of infection, affecting pedestrians, vehicles, children and the elderly. Complaints to municipal mayor Sergio Ángel Velázquez Rivera have resulted only in waste removal crews, while the underlying pipe failure remains unrepaired, raising fears of a larger health crisis during the rainy season.

In Hopelchén, the new sumidero installed at the municipal market’s parking lot in February has begun overflowing with black water, emitting strong fetid smells. Vendors such as Fernando González Méndez say the problem has persisted for weeks, and the market has lacked a manager for three years. Although a market regidora, Sara Baeza Campos, is appointed, no corrective action has been taken, leaving shoppers and traders exposed to sanitation hazards.
