Sferical One AI supercomputer launches in Sweden

Sweden has launched Sferical One, a shared AI supercomputer designed for industrial use. Built on Nvidia hardware, the system utilizes 1,152 GPUs across 16 Nvidia DGX GB300 systems. The initiative aims to provide sovereign infrastructure, offering Swedish companies secure and scalable AI capacity under domestic control.

Major Swedish corporations, including AstraZeneca, Ericsson, Saab, SEB, and Wallenberg Investments, are founding partners. Other strategic partners include SKF. The supercomputer is intended to support diverse sectors such as pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, defense, finance, and manufacturing, with applications ranging from drug discovery to predictive maintenance.

This development coincides with a broader AI infrastructure boom across the Nordic region. Countries including Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland are seeing significant investment in high-density data centers. While the region benefits from cool climates and low-carbon electricity, the rapid expansion faces challenges regarding power grid constraints and regulatory changes.
