AI supercomputer infrastructure development in Sweden

Overview

The deployment of high-performance AI supercomputing infrastructure in Sweden has progressed through two distinct initiatives.

Initially, Scaleway, a subsidiary of the French group Iliad, announced plans to install its first commercial AI supercomputer outside of France in Sweden. Utilizing AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and AMD ROCm software, the project is intended to support European startups and enterprises while bolstering “European technological sovereignty.”

Following this, the Sferical One AI supercomputer was launched in Sweden. Unlike the Scaleway project, Sferical One is built on Nvidia hardware, specifically utilizing 1,152 GPUs across 16 Nvidia DGX GB300 systems. This shared industrial supercomputer is supported by a consortium of major Swedish corporations, including AstraZeneca, Ericsson, Saab, SEB, and Wallenberg Investments. The initiative aims to provide secure, domestic AI capacity for sectors such as pharmaceuticals, defense, and telecommunications.

These developments occur amidst a broader expansion of high-density data centers across the Nordic region, which faces potential challenges regarding regulatory changes and power grid constraints.
