Shahram Sadeghi executed in Iran for protest-related charges
The Iranian judiciary executed Shahram Sadeghi on Sunday morning. Sadeghi was convicted by the Karaj Revolutionary Court for his involvement in an incident during the January 2026 protests.
According to official state media, Sadeghi used a vehicle to strike and injure seven police officers near the Golzar intersection in Karaj. The judiciary charged him with conducting operational actions in favor of Israel, the United States, and other hostile groups, violating national security laws.
Human rights organizations have criticized the execution. Mahmoud Amiri Moghadam of Iran Human Rights stated that Sadeghi was sentenced based on forced confessions and through an unfair trial process. Reports indicate that at least 29 protesters have been executed since the end of March 2026.
This execution occurs amid a broader trend of increased capital punishment in Iran. Amnesty International notes that Iran remains one of the world's most frequent users of the death penalty, following China. Recent data suggests the country executed at least 2,159 people in 2025.
