Dapper Music faces allegations of fraud and withheld royalties from Nigerian artists

Multiple Nigerian music artists have leveled serious allegations of financial misconduct and fraud against music executive Damilola ‘Dapper’ Akinwunmi and his label, Dapper Music.

Singer Shallipopi has accused the label of withholding royalties for 46 songs, including the hit ‘E Don Cast’, and allegedly selling his music catalogue without proper accounting. He further claims Dapper forged his signature to secure a 10-year distribution contract and a deal with Virgin Music Group, pocketing the resulting funds. Shallipopi stated he has reported the matter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Other prominent artists have joined the outcry. T. I Blaze alleged a N1.2 billion royalty and licensing discrepancy, questioning the transparency of revenue shares involving Virgin Music. Seyi Vibez also criticized the label, claiming he made significant earnings during his tenure that he did not ultimately receive, and suggesting he played a major role in the label's success.

Additionally, reports indicate that chef Hilda Baci has reportedly split from Dapper, with claims that the controversy surrounding the label has negatively impacted her business and public image.
