Allegations of fraud against Dapper Music

Several Nigerian music artists have accused music executive Damilola ‘Dapper’ Akinwunmi and his label, Dapper Music, of financial misconduct and fraud. Singer Shallipopi alleged that the label withheld royalties for 46 songs, including ‘E Don Cast’, and claimed Akinwunmi forged his signature to secure a 10-year distribution contract and a deal with Virgin Music Group. Shallipopi reported the matter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Other artists, including T. I Blaze and Seyi Vibez, have also raised concerns regarding revenue transparency and missing earnings. T. I Blaze cited a N1.2 billion discrepancy in royalties and licensing, while Seyi Vibez questioned the distribution of significant earnings made during his tenure.

In response, Akinwunmi, also known as Dapper Damm, denied the allegations. He stated on X that he has ‘nothing to hide’ and has submitted financial records to the relevant authorities. He characterized the claims as ‘false narratives’ and indicated that official processes would determine the truth.

Expanding on his defense, Akinwunmi rejected claims of withheld royalties and master ownership disputes, arguing that the company’s investments in artist development and promotion have actually exceeded generated revenue. He noted that many artist accounts remain unrecouped, suggesting funds are owed to the company rather than the artists. Akinwunmi asserted that all agreements were negotiated with legal counsel, specifically noting that Seyi Vibez was accompanied by counsel during their professional relationship. To resolve the controversy, he has called for an independent forensic audit to examine the financial records.
