Shanghai AI Conference Emphasizes Ethics and Global Collaboration

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) took place in Shanghai from July 17‑20 2026, featuring a side event called “WAIC UP! 2026 Youth Dialogue” that gathered international thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and experts to discuss AI governance, ethics, and the role of cultural and religious values. Northeastern University psychology professor David DeSteno argued that while AI cannot partake in religious rituals, the real challenge is deciding whose moral traditions shape AI systems that affect billions.

Participants highlighted the conference’s showcase of technology such as AR glasses providing real‑time Chinese‑English subtitles. Bill Reichert, a partner at Pegasus Tech Ventures, described the experience as a “wow moment” and said AI is flattening the world by removing language barriers. Attendees, including representatives from China Daily and International Services Shanghai, concluded that Shanghai is positioning itself as a hub where talent, policy support, and cross‑border collaboration can thrive without fear of AI.
