Shani Dev Saturday rituals and auspicious signs for relief from Sade Sati

Hindu tradition marks Saturdays as a day dedicated to Shani Dev, the deity associated with the planet Saturn. Devotees observe the Shani Pradosh fast and perform specific prayers, offering water, milk, bel leaves to Shiva and oil or black sesame to Shani. These rituals are believed to lessen the negative effects of Shani’s periods known as Sade Sati and Dhaiyya.

Astrological guides describe several signs that may appear on a Saturday and are taken as favorable omens: sighting a black cow or a calf being fed, a crow on the roof or balcony, a black dog appearing unexpectedly, a passing mustard‑oil vessel, or a beggar at the door. According to the belief system, each of these occurrences signals Shani Dev’s blessings and the removal of obstacles.

The practices emphasize charitable acts such as donating black clothing, oil, or sesame to those in need, which are also considered to attract Shani’s goodwill.
